Job Summary / Overview

Under the direction of the Operations Shift Supervisor, the Process Operator II will perform standard operating functions in the areas of DCS, field operations, process and quality control, start-up/shut-down, and emergency response.

Essential Job Functions

  • Safely operate pumps, compressors, fired heaters, boilers, reactors, distillation columns and other plant equipment within safe operating ranges.
  • Participation in company Emergency Response Team (ERT).
  • Make changes to the operating process as necessary to maintain product quality.  Adjust control instruments, valves or switches in order to regulate pressure, temperature or flow rate of product; to direct flow of product to other units or to maintain specified levels in tanks and towers.  Operate control room instrumentation systems and coordinate activities with outside operators.
  • Monitor the performance of plant equipment and process conditions.  Read flow meters, and temperature and pressure gauges.  Take routine readings on process variables.
  • Promptly respond to process alarms / constraints.
  • Perform general maintenance, repair, and cleanup of plant equipment for safe and efficient operation.
  • Draw samples of products from the process for laboratory testing.  Perform lab testing on some products.
  • Perform the functions of an Emergency Response Crew member or provide general support.
  • Generate Work Orders (WOs), prepare logs and submit to SPS.
  • Capable to understand and follow plant policies and procedures.
  • Able to troubleshoot problems to determine resolution within safe operating limits.
  • Follow all relevant company policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations

  • None required.

Education, Experience, and/or Training

  • Highschool diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of process operations experience in chemical or refining plant required.
  • Two (2) year associate degree in Process Operations preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), plant equipment and process controls.
  • Working knowledge of Distributed Control System (DCS).
  • Ability to write operating procedures.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Teamwork Orientation.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook required.

Physical

  • Ability to lift 20 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged amounts of time required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate through various means required.
  • Physical ability to work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of scaffolds, stairs, and ladders, at varied excessive heights.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (respirator, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, heeled boots, and hearing protection).

Environmental

  • This job operates in an industrial environment, with heavy machinery. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn in the field.
  • Requires consistent field work at times in extreme weather conditions.
  • Noise levels are typically loud.

Work Schedule

  • Rotating twelve (12) hour shifts including on-call schedule, weekends, holiday, and overtime.
  • May work longer hours to meet deadlines as necessary or to support facility emergencies.

Travel

  • Less than 10% of the time.
